The Young Achievers Project (YAP) was a 12 week pilot partnership project for young men of African Caribbean heritage aged 12-15. The boys followed a taught course. The project was a partnership between Camberwell After School Project, Archbishop Michael Ramsey Technology College, National Black Boys Can Association, Community Development Involvement Unit, Southwark Council and parents and carers. The boys are selected on the basis that they were individuals who were underachieving due to a host of varied issues that were affecting the course of their lives. At the end of the project the boys completed an evaluation form which captures what they felt about the overall project.
The aim of the project is to raise the aspirations and attainment of young men by identifying and dealing with some of the barriers that prevent them from academically achieving their potential in school. Also, to provide tools and target experiences that improve self esteem boosts self confidence, build trust in self and others and develop as sense of community responsibly.
The programme has been successful in positively engaging existing participants. We look forward to a continuing relationship with these and other young people in the coming academic year.
