We’re thrilled to announce the return of the C.A.S.P Holiday Playscheme this summer! Running from Monday 28th July to Friday 29th August, Monday to Friday, our programme is designed to keep children active, happy, and engaged all summer long.
We’ve prepared an exciting mix of trips, creative activities, and fun-filled experiences that everyone will love. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up:
🎬 Cinema- A day at the movies to enjoy the latest family-friendly films together.
🌊 Brighton Seaside -A classic seaside adventure with sand, games, and ice cream!
🐑 Godstone Farm-Get close to animals, explore the farm, and enjoy the outdoors.
🍰 Afternoon Tea-A relaxing afternoon enjoying tasty treats and good company.
🎳 Bowling-Strike up some friendly competition on the bowling lanes.
🏛 Horniman Museum and Gardens-A cultural day out exploring fascinating exhibits and beautiful gardens.
🌳 Myatt’s Fields Park-Outdoor fun and games in one of our favourite local parks.
🏅 BTP Sport Camp-Get active and learn new skills at a dynamic sports camp.
Alongside these special outings, we’ll also have daily activities including arts & crafts, sports, group games and more — so every day is packed with excitement!

Last month at the end of volunteer week, we proudly celebrated our amazing volunteers at a special awards evening at Camberwell After-School Project. The event honoured their incredible dedication and the positive impact they make on local children and families every day.

We are thrilled to thank Tim Smart at Bubble Food Camberwell for his incredible generosity. Tim has once again shown his commitment to supporting our community by donating £300 towards the Nursery and After School Christmas Party.

This isn't the first time Tim and Bubble Foods have stepped up to help us. Earlier this year, they kindly contributed £250 to our 2023 Crowdfunding Campaign, helping us make a meaningful impact on the children and families we serve.

Thanks to Tim's support, the Christmas Party was a huge success! The children had an amazing time, and the festive spirit was truly heartwarming. We have sent Tim a personal thank-you email along with some lovely photos from the event.

Celebrating Our Successes 

Between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, our After after-school service made a real difference to local families by providing 2,311 free after-school dinners and delivering 8,088.5 hours of childcare to our community.

During 2023, we ran five holiday playschemes, delivering an incredible 13,408 hours of childcare, with 1,564 hours subsidized for low-income families through our partnership with Southwark Council’s HAF program.

Feedback from the children was heartwarming--94% said they made new friends, and the top highlight for many (39%) was “Trying New Things.”

In January 2024, we proudly re-launched our Breakfast Club with support from The Cyril and Eve Jumbo Charitable Trust. Between January 1 and July 31, we provided 339 nutritious breakfasts, ensuring children in our community started their school day well-fed and ready to learn.

CASP was never just about filling a gap in affordable childcare. From the start, we’ve been driven by a bold vision: to support the education, development, and wellbeing of Southwark residents.

Looking ahead, we know there’s still work to do. Over the next one to two years, securing funding to ensure sustainability and strengthen our financial reserves is our top priority. Once we’re financially secure, we’ll focus on expanding and adapting our services to address growing challenges, such as children’s mental health struggles and childhood obesity, which our staff see increasing in the community.

We’re excited about what lies ahead and are grateful for the continued support of our partners, funders, and community. Together, we can carry on supporting Southwark’s families.

This category celebrates both Community Businesses and Not for Profit Organisations. What these businesses have in common is that their focus is on positively benefitting society. All profit from a community business is reinvested in the local area and all profit from a charitable organisation goes to fulfilling their objectives. We are extremely proud of our team and our accomplishments this year. This recognition shows that despite the ongoing funding challenges that we have experienced in the past year, our services are still making a positive impact in the community every day.

We are honored to be finalists in this category alongside such outstanding organizations, including 4-22 Foundation, Central London Alliance CIC, Evenbreak, Heart of the City, Mothers Into Work CIC, Sport Works, TiffinWalli CIC, and Wildflowers of London. The competition is truly strong, and we wish everyone the best of luck

The awards will be held on Thursday 27th February 2025 at The Leonardo Royal London Tower Bridge Hotel at 6.30pm.  We would love to be able to attend, however, due to a lack of financial reserves, we currently reinvest all incoming funding back into operational costs. We need your help to cover the cost of two tickets (£215+ VAT), so a couple of staff representatives can attend the award ceremony.

It all began with a simple desire – Carmen’s love for her daughter and a determination to keep her career dreams alive.
When Carmen needed childcare after her daughter transitioned to primary school, the mismatch between school hours and work schedules left her with a tough choice.
But Carmen wasn't one to back down. Instead, it sparked a fire, a determination to build something bigger than just childcare – a community.
 
From Humble Beginnings to a Family Affair
CASP started small, a place for her daughter and a few others facing similar struggles. But something remarkable happened. It wasn't just an after-school program; it was a family. Parents rallied around the cause.
They weren't just users, they were invested. They helped prepare food, organised activities and became a supportive network. CASP became a collaborative effort, ensuring every child felt loved and cared for.
 


CASP takes shape.
A defining moment arrived with the acquisition of a purpose-built building. This wasn't just bricks and mortar; it was a symbol - a physical manifestation of what quality childcare should look and feel like.
The building was used to launch the 1989 Children’s Act, and hosted many parliamentary visitors to promote childcare issues, featured on TV, and hosted visitors from Sweden and other countries to promote child and family services. CASP was seen as a beacon in the community with every child from the local schools begging their parents to attend.
 
Resilience in the Face of Change 
Change is inevitable, Government policies shifted, funding became scarce, and new communities brought new challenges. Regulations grew, paperwork piled up, and the focus shifted from free play to risk assessments. Yet, CASP persevered. The team adapted, navigating the changing landscape with unwavering dedication.
 
What kept them going? 
CASP have survived for 38 years, the pride of surviving where others couldn't.
Picture this, You're strolling through Camberwell Green, enjoying the sunshine, when you see a familiar face. It's a parent you remember from when their child used CASP services! You stop to chat, and they light up, sharing how much CASP helped their child. They tell you about the specific activities their child loved at the time, and how those experiences continue to have a positive impact on them as an adult. It's a heartwarming reminder of the lasting difference CASP makes in children's lives.
 
Today CASP is facing a critical challenge – a lack of funding threatens to close their doors. But the story doesn't have to end here. Summer Fun Boost! Camberwell After School Project Receives Grant for Exciting Activities

We're thrilled to announce that the Camberwell After School Project (CASP) has received a fantastic £2,000 grant from the Newcomen Collette Foundation! This vital funding will help us provide an amazing summer holiday programme for local children.

The Newcomen Collette Foundation has a rich history of supporting young people in Southwark, dating back an incredible 300 years! Their generosity has been instrumental in our summer playschemes for over 30 years.

​This grant allows CASP to offer a wider range of activities and experiences for the children. Imagine coach trips to the seaside, fun-filled park adventures, and museum and cinema visits! These outings are some of the highlights our children look forward to this summer.

• We've got some fantastic news to share! A massive thank you goes out to the Buchanan Programme & Miles Waller for their incredibly generous donation of £8,000 to CASP! This amazing contribution will make a real difference in the lives of the children we support.

For those who might not know, the Buchanan Programme is an employee-directed philanthropic program at Orbis Investments. This means that their employees, like Miles Waller, get to choose charities close to their hearts to receive donations from the company. We're so grateful that Miles chose C.A.S.P, and for the Buchanan Programme's commitment to supporting local communities!

We have some amazing news!
​Thanks to the incredible generosity of the St Olave's & St Saviour's School Foundation, CASP's summer play scheme is secured for the next three years!

This generous grant of £3,000 per year from the St Olave's & St Saviour's School Foundation ensures the continuation of our ever-popular summer programme. It's filled with fun and educational activities that keep children engaged and entertained during the long summer break. The Foundation's support has been a tremendous help, and these summer programmes have consistently proven to be a hit with both parents and children in our community.

We'd like to express our sincere gratitude to Cathy Matthews, Russell Walters, and the entire board of trustees at the St Olave's & St Saviour's School Foundation. Your continued support makes a real difference in the lives of children in our community, giving them a safe and stimulating space to enjoy their summer break.

As you know, CASP has been struggling to keep our doors open and is at serious risk of closing due to a lack of funds to balance our books. We will have a shortfall of £160k at the end of this financial year and need to raise the necessary funds to enable us to continue to
provide our much-needed childcare service.

This funding marks a significant step forward in our commitment to providing inclusive care and support for individuals with special needs. It is helping us in our challenge of staying open.

CASP's Volunteering Work Experience Programme is here to transform lives with the support of Team London Bridge's grant. The grant will cover DBS checks, training, travel and lunch expenses.

​Over 12 weeks, 10 unemployed residents, aged 18 and above, have the opportunity to immerse themselves in childcare, dedicating three days a week to hands-on experience with children aged 2 to 11.

The program is open to Southwark residents of Peabody Estates. We would love to hear from you if you are from the wards of Camberwell, Newington, Elephant & Castle and Faraday.

The Camberwell After School Project (CASP) is a community-focused organization providing essential services for families in Camberwell, London. Their offerings include afterschool collections, as well as a breakfast club to kickstart the day with a nutritious meal. Additionally, CASP operates a nursery catering to the developmental needs of 2, 3, and 4-year-olds.
